Building entrances are an interesting phenomenon forming the cross-over between public and private space. This is a worthy competition exploring how this could evolve. Congratulations to the winner Studio Seilern with a very interesting entry.Casa-in-TeleCittàhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11100229873490881256noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3556046646206277640.post-56794091987027914362013-09-10T11:40:00.001+01:002013-09-10T11:47:29.133+01:00PVE Design

This is an example of understated, simple and elegant architecture that really appeals to me. Not only this but it pushes the boundaries in terms of public access and it was built for a reasonable cost. Congratulations to the architects Duggan Morris and look forward to more from this stable.

Ellis Woodman provides a well written account of it in BD. However the article could do with more illustration of its urban context - perhaps a map showing how it links to the neighbourhood - especially with the article preview:

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Duggan Morris’s precisely considered learning centre provides an elegant oasis of openness that links a south London psychiatric facility with its historic urban surroundings.

I am in the process of reading this book - so more comment on it in the future. For the moment I just want to have a post centred around this illustration - just the sort of thing I admire.

Casa-in-TeleCittàhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11100229873490881256noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3556046646206277640.post-44907667926434921352012-10-05T11:02:00.002+01:002012-10-05T17:57:25.500+01:00Essex House

I know this is a bit random because I haven't added anything to this blog for over a year. Its not there hasn't been anything to "catch my eye", but I guess I have allowed things that "catch my time" to dampen the spirit.
I came across this in bdonline. It wouldn't be out of place in Russia. Good luck to the designers and to Living Architecture for commissioning it.
Since publishing this post earlier today my copy of the RIBA Journal was delivered. The image is featured on the cover and the article inside explains that Living Architecture is a commercial venture by philosopher Alain de Botton. This is one of several holiday homes which amongst other things have an educational purpose to the extent that he calls the venture a "social enterprise". I think I am even more impressed.Casa-in-TeleCittàhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11100229873490881256noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3556046646206277640.post-68649205242912229662011-05-28T19:32:00.000+01:002011-05-28T19:33:14.355+01:00City illustrations - Lotta Nieminen

I came across the work of Lotta Nieminen recently. A temporary installation with cultural and social intent - it's edgy and not glossy but comes across as full of spirit. Intriguing to know what the show is like.
For me car parks are part of the city edge (edge of a hole?), they are low grade in terms of city quality and we should learn from activities like this that bring them into fruitful play. Carolyn Steel's piece in BD 090710 - Why not try living on the edge? - insightfully opens up some thoughts along these lines. How many car parks do we know that lead a double life with car boot sales at the weekend? While car parks are a necessity of the current human condition, the ability to make use of them when they are not being used for their prime purpose, does the city a great favour. What other uses have you observed or would like to see?

Casa-in-TeleCittàhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11100229873490881256noreply@blogger.com0
